Gerrard blame is outrageous

Steven Gerrard had far from his best game in a Liverpool shirt during Sunday's Carling Cup Final against Chelsea. Even the player himself wouldn't argue with that.

But the reaction from some 'fans', notably those who've questioned his will to win with Liverpool, has been nothing short of a disgrace.

After witnessing Gerrard's performances at club level over the past few years, where the player has progressed from being a promising youngster to one of the world's best players, how can such a player's determination be in doubt?

Gerrard enjoyed a phenomenal 2003-4 season, when his energy and desire was often the only highlight in an otherwise disappointing season for the Reds. Had it not been for the consistently high quality performances of the club captain, Liverpool would not have qualified for this season's Champions League.

And despite not managing to reach the same level of performance on a consistent basis this season, he's already equalled his best goals tally for a season, and picked up the Player of the Month award for December.

Jamie Carragher may be the fans' favourite for the club's Player of the Year award this season, but no other player has been more important to Liverpool than Gerrard.

The minority of Liverpool fans who've been highly critical of Gerrard in the aftermath of the Cup Final defeat will do well to remember that.
